NewsandObserver Endorses Erv

Portman lives in  District 4 – running county wide at large
campaign-logo-erv-portman-county-commissionDemocrat Erv Portman, 57, a Cary businessman, has been a Wake commissioner and a Cary Town Council member and seeks to return to the board representing a southern/central portion of the county. He is a partner with his wife in WestStar Precision, which makes products for the aerospace and medical fields. Portman would be comfortable with his pro-public education, pro-environmental protection, careful growth positions with the other progressives on the commissioners. He’s a smart, engaging person who seems open to the ideas of those who may disagree with him on some issues.

And Portman’s public service has been marked by his outreach to constituents, something he could be expected to continue as a commissioner.

Republican Kenn Gardner, 58, served from 2000-2008 as a Wake commissioner, and also has made an unsuccessful run for North Carolina secretary of state. Gardner’s a pretty mainstream conservative, a reasonable enough voice in debate. He’s an architect and lives in Raleigh. That he previously served multiple terms on the board may indicate he looked after constituents’ interests, which is good. But the current group of commissioners has momentum in terms of making Wake a more progressive, active, imaginative (bike trails, public transit) kind of place. We believe Portman would be inclined to be part of that movement.

Wake County Commissioners join Mayors to Endorse Erv

Wake County Commissioner’s Endorse Erv

Wake has a great county board and I am proud to be endorsed by so many of those serving.

On making his endorsement of Erv, Commissioner Sig Hutchinson said “Erv has the experience and knowledge as a former Commissioner and Cary Town Council Member, to continue moving Wake County forward supporting public education,   job creation and a safe and clean environment. As a longtime friend and colleague, I have the greatest amount of respect and appreciation for Erv and look forward to serving with him as a Wake County Commissioner.”

Wake County is the second fastest growing large county in America. That growth places challenges that we must face. Erv will work with the rest of the board to make sure we build new schools to better keep up with growth. He will work to protect the natural beauty of Wake County, by preserving open space, parks and greenways for future generations to enjoy. He will protect our lakes and be sure we keep our drinking water clean and pure. That’s why these commissioners who know the job, know Erv will help them make our county better.

district2Matt Calabria – Wake county Commissioner, – “Erv is a committed, passionate advocate for what our community needs: strong schools, a healthy environment, and a vibrant economy. A small business owner and longtime public servant, Erv’s impressive track record more than speaks for itself. His forward–thinking leadership will serve the county well.”

Triangle Labor Council Endorses Erv for Wake County Board

aflcio_logo_grey5bI am pleased to announce that my campaign has received the endorsement from  the Triangle Labor Council NC AFL-CIO. Their members serve us all in so many ways each day, I look forward to serving them on the County Board.

To date my campaign has been endorsed by community leaders, business owners, the Sierra Club, the Police Benevolent Association, southeast Raleigh Wake Citizen Association (RWCA M-PAC).  This broad based cross section of our community support shows that we can govern in a way that respects all, and listens to all before we decide what to do.

North Carolina Association of Educators endorses Erv

The North Carolina Association of Educators has endorsed my race for the Wake county board.

I know the important work that this organization does in advocating for our teachers in the classroom. I am proud that they stand with me in this race, and I look forward to my name being added to their  “apple card” of endorsed candidates. Many voters rely on this list to know who will protect and defend high quality education for our children and grandchildren. I know that it has always been each generations responsibility to educate the next. I know we can do better and look forward to helping us improve.

Raleigh Wake Citizens Association – M Pac Endorses Erv

I am pleased to have earned the support of the “M Pac” for the Raleigh Wake Citizens Association, in my campaign to serve all of Wake on the County Board.

For decades RWCA has been a clear and consistent voice on issues in our community.  They have a proud tradition of being informed, aware and active to improve Raleigh.  Wake county is one of the nations fastest growing counties, and I look forward to working with the RWCA  to be sure we grow better over time. Good jobs, and excellent public education serve as a foundation for the future we can all be proud of.

Sierra Club Endorses Erv for County Board

sierraclub-pac-endorsed-logo

To stay one of the best places to live long term we must save some land and forest for open space and parks. Erv knows how important that is, and will lead us to preserve and protect some of the natural beauty of Wake County as we grow. We also need to protect our lakes and streams which are the source of our drinking water. Preservation of open space helps do both.

In its endorsement Rob Rowe, with the North Carolina Sierra Club, Capital Group, stated the Sierra Club has endorsed Erv’ s candidacy in the NC Wake County Commissioner District 4 in appreciation of his demonstrated commitment to protecting the environment.

Erv is proud to have earned the Sierra Club endorsement again this year.  I know how much we all love the natural beauty of this place we call home, and I am proud of my record to help protect it as we grow. I hope you will join my efforts to accomplish this important work.

Transparency in School Construction Costs – Good Idea!

We spend a lot of money building new schools, this is a great website from Texas that lets the public compare costs per square foot and per student. Transparency is critical to keeping taxpayer support, allowing citizens to keep a eye on how we spend their money. I want to do the same for our work here in wake county. I’m a democrat, this is a Texas republican idea, what’s important is the fact that it’s a good idea and we should adopt it. Thinking about great results not partisan talking points.
